PTZ Auto-Tracking

The PTZ Auto-Tracking analytic automatically controls PTZ cameras when activity is detected. A Rule can be configured where the PTZ camera can be automatically controlled by Symphony to zoom and follow objects that have broken the Rule (such as person entered into the alarm zone or crossed a tripwire).

Camera Setup Recommendations

1.      When possible, minimize the number of extraneous moving objects in the camera’s field of view that you do not want to track, for example, trees.

2.      Eliminate On Screen Display (OSD) of PTZ movements. Some cameras display information on the screen when panning/tilting/zooming. For example, “Zooming 5x” may appear in large letters at bottom of screen. The Symphony video analytic may erroneously try to track this text instead of the objects of interest. Camera manufacturers typically provide a way to turn off this text. For example:

3.      In a Bosch camera, you might select the Camera OSD off option in one of the Settings Groups of the camera Web page interface.

4.      In a Pelco camera, you might have to click the OSD button, then select Display Setup and turn OFF various labels in the camera Web page interface.

5.      The camera must be stable, if wind or vibrations causes the camera to move, false alarms will occur.

6.      This engine does not perform where the objects are very close to the camera, or if the environment is very busy.

7.      Absolute positioning cameras are preferred over relative positioning cameras.

8.      MJPEG mode, or running MPEG-4 at higher frame rates increases performance.

9.      Ensure that enough available CPU is present to perform proper analysis.

10.  When troubleshooting, increase the frame rate and image quality settings. Do NOT maximize analysis resolution. In general, do not go above 400 x 300. The higher the analysis resolution, the more strain on CPU. For analysis FPS, stay at 12 FPS or below.

Set Up Camera for PTZ Auto-Tracking

1.      Ensure that you have a license for this analytic. See Specifying Licenses.

2.      Add a camera as per instructions in Device - Network (IP) Cameras or Video Servers.

3.      In the Add Ons section of camera configuration, first select Outdoor People and Vehicle Tracking OR Indoor People Tracking by switching one of them to ON. The PTZ Auto-Tracking option becomes active. Switch it to ON. Click Configure.

4.      Use the default analytic settings or modify settings as per the information contained in the following table.

5.      Assign a rule to your camera based on this analytic.

Option

Description

Default

Analysis FPS

Indicates how many frames will be analyzed by the system. Typically the default value should not be altered. To conserve CPU resources, you can lower the setting, but this may negatively alter the video engine performance.

10

Analysis Resolution

Resolution that is used to analyze frames. Normally this is lower than Capture Resolution to conserve CPU.
